Hrubá Vrbka

There are very beautiful localities with Mesobromion plant community in the Protected Landscape Area (PLA) White Carpathians. With over 70 species of vascular plants typically counted per square meter and up to 103 species per 24 m2, the White Carpathians grassland communities belong to the most species-rich of Central Europe. Their richness is reflected in the name commonly given by the local people: "flower meadows". What makes them truly unique is their diverse and plentiful orchid assemblage. Most common are Gymnadenia conopsea, Listera ovata, Platanthera bifolia, and Traunsteinera globosa. Neither Orchis mascula nor O. militaris are rare. In the northeastern part, Dactylorhiza sambucina and Orchis morio are quite abundant. Real jewels are Anacamptis pyramidalis, far more numerous here than anywhere else in the Czech Republic, and Ophrys fuciflora, scattered all over the White Carpathians but altogether absent from the rest of the country (

We have made use of species richness in this area and started the Salvere project here. The aim of the project is the re-vegetation of arable land by different methods with the aim of increasing species-richness of the site. Therefore, we have addressed workers of the Czech Union for Nature and Conservation White Carpathians (CSOP White Carpathians) who has got many experiences with grassing in this area and together we established two permanent plots near the town Hrubá Vrbka in 2009. The aim of our trial is to show the best method of grassing. It is the aim of Salvere project. Therefore, after plant material was taken from the first plot (donor plot) it was applied to arable land of the second plot (receptor plot = demonstration plot) in the same year. The donor plot lies in the Certoryje Nature Reserve 410-470 m above sea level. The reserve is a complex of semi-natural steppe meadows with interspersed trees and a quantity of protected and endangered species. This complex of representative “flower meadows” is the largest in PLA White Carpathians and it is one of the most valuable areas here. Demonstration site lies in South Moravian part of PLA White Carpathians, 10 km south-east from Veselí nad Moravou city in altitude 285 m a.s.l. The site is a part of the Certoryje Nature Reserve. It is arable land which was well prepared (ploughing, harrowing) before biomass (green hay, seeds) application.
The receptor plot is our demonstration plot which will serve as illustration of efficiency of grassing by different methods:

green hay (GH)

plant material removed from the donor plot and immediately transferred to the arable land of the receptor plot.

seed stripping (SS)

seeds harvest by seed stripper :o once a season (SS1),

three times during the growing season (SS1-3)
